SECRET WINGS

SECRET WINGS

I had wings
and hovered
high above
a steel-span
and watched
our family car
drop
into night.

I kicked my legs and
stretched my wings
in panicked air
too thick for flight.

I fell and tumbled
entangling wings and arms.

Sunlight licked
my eyes
my wings
 dissolved.

I stumbled out of bed
as clumsy as a boy
half removed from sleep.

I checked outside the window -
our family car
squatting in the drive
as safe as steel.

At breakfast
my mother asked
how I slept.

I frowned
and shrugged

my secret wings.
