UNDER THE GUN (part iv)

photo:  unattributed

UNDER THE GUN (part iv)

(Homicide:  the deliberate and unlawful killing of one person by another, murder)

Not counting wars

(as long as soldiers are killing other soldiers
war deaths don’t count as murder
collateral damage seems to be a gray area.)

In this suffering world
The United Snakes of Murder
is a big offender
although
not
the
worst

at least not
per capita
a data point that skews.

Take heart.

Gun deaths per capita are highest in Central America.  Is there any wonder people are leaving?  However, that’s there, we’re here…

US DATA

BODY COUNT:

15,000 gun-murders (2017) per 325,700,000 population

give or take
only the numbers

murders
themselves
are all take
no give
but

take
heart

it’s only.004% of the population dead per year by murder most foul (as in the best it is.)

By the by, there were 15 soldiers killed in 2017.

A moment to celebrate the country with the least:

Iceland had 4 murders in 2017

none by gun by gum
none by gun since 2007

per capita Iceland has as many guns as the US
1/3 of the total population of 330,000 own
110,000 guns

(civilians own about 393,000,000 guns in the US)

nobody is sure why Icelanders
are not killing each other
in greater numbers
with more enthusiasm

but, again, that’s there, this is here:

St. Louis, MO
population 308,000
about the same as Iceland –

160,000 concealed carry permits
this does not count long guns

187 homicides by firearm

no slackers in the state of misery.

WORD PROBLEM:

If there are 393,000,000 guns, and you fired one every second, how long would it take to fire them all?

I hate word problems.

Answer:  12.5 years

God Bless America

BLOOD SHED:

USA
2017

11,862
men murdered
by gun

one man = 1.5 gallons of blood = 17,793 gallons

(round up for performance)

men, ah one, and ah two, and ah sing:

18,000
gallons of blood

18,000
gallons

on the wall

on the floor

on the concrete

in the grass

you know - wherever

Plus:

3,580
women murdered
by gun

one woman = 1.1 gallons = 3,938 gallons

rounded up to 4,000

(everybody, now)

22,000 gallons
of blood
on the wall
            etc.

that’s a lot of blood

but we can scale

no reason to imagine
gallon jugs stacked
all around the house

how about –

swimming pools full

Word Problem:

If one standard sized, back yard, 12x24 foot swimming pool holds 11,000 gallons of blood, how many swimming pools will it take to hold all the blood spilled in one year?

Two!

swimming in blood
floating in blood
drowning in blood
up to our knees over our heads

Very good, kids.

Take heart:

For all the venom
flowing through
our public, and one would suspect
private
discourse
it’s a wonder
the blood pool
isn’t
longer
wider
deeper

Word Problem:

If an Olympic Size swimming pool holds 660,000 gallons of blood, and 22,000 gallons of blood is shed per year, how many years would it take to fill one Olympic Size swimming pool?

            you have fifteen seconds…

                        hands waving

                                                thirty years!

Yes!  Excellent!

You see, it’s not as bad as you thought.

KIDS

I believe 2nd Amendment absolutists love their guns more than they love their children.

1,300 gun deaths per year

650 are homicides, murders, that is

494 are suicides

the rest are accidents

I’m sorry, the amount of blood
lost by children due to gun death
is too hard to calculate

they come in so many different sizes.

O.G.?

Yes

Why so sardonic?

Because, if not, it would be too hard to bear.

Yes, well, we send our thoughts and prayers.

Take heart.

Macbeth:  Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood/Clean from my hand?  No; this my hand will rather/The multitudinous seas incarnadine,/Making the green one red.

Lady Macbeth:  A little water clears us of this deed...

Post Script:  On May 31, 2019, twelve people were murdered in a mass shooting in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  Seven men, and five women.  That would be about 16 gallons of blood.

JESUS CRIED

                                                                         (NASA photo)

Jesus cried
            Jesus died
                        Jesus never coming back

Who we are
is who we’ve lost

Grief is a hole
that never gets filled

The time we stay
never as long
as the time we never were

never as long
as the time we’ll never be

Time is a hole
that never gets filled

Surrender is the gift
given by defeat

All victories are marked
by losses

Anger is a hole
that never gets filled

Jesus cried
            Jesus died
                        Jesus never coming back.

SOMOS AL BARCO

We are the boat

supple
 &
seaworthy

hollow
solid

capable of journeys
as far as time.

Our holds
are filled
with treasure

we have been
merciless
in our
acquisition
of
things
&
be-ings.

Somos al Mar

We are the sea

waves
&
shoals

whirlpools

currents
&
dangers

we
are
the
storms
upon
the
ocean.

What frightens us
we call wilderness

what we don’t understand
we call treacherous

we are

wild
&
treacherous.

We are the sea

we are the boat

we are the people.

*Somos al barco, somos al mar
Yo navego en ti, tu navegas en mi.

We are the boat, we are the sea
I sail in you, you sail in me.

ENTRANCEMENT

When a forest enters your dream

You feel

roots groaning
toward water
and leaves scraping
across sky.

When a mountain enters your dream

You feel

every stone
trembling
on its slope.

When crow enters

You balance
on thin branches
tasting breezes
from the north.

All the mad chemical jokes
your brain tells itself
are nothing

when wind enters your dream

and you ride rough currents
ecstatic & wild.

And then

when dreams
go to ground

and daylight slips
across your face

your eyelids flutter

as you beg
your anxious animals

for just a little more sleep.

Repair the world

As if

back straight
feet flat on the floor

SUFFICIENT FEAR

(photo:  NY Times)

About 633 migrants have been turned away since January, unable to prove sufficient fear of being tortured or persecuted.
New York Times, April 5, 2019

Sufficient – acceptableampleplentifulsatisfactoryagreeable

On the scale of gobbledygook.

On the scale of fear

            what?

“I prefer 1,000 times being jailed, than being dead.”
Selvin Alvarado, Honduras, 29, father of two
                        waiting at the US/Mexican border

On the scale of

            1-1,000

or on the scale of

            being dead

Not sufficient.

“The crisis at our border is worsening…”
            Kirstjen Neilson
Former Director, Dept of Homeland Security, USA

Worsening

on the scale of

            Selvin Alvarado
            and his two children

or

            what?

On the scale of

purgatory

On the scale of

danger violence extortion corruption rape

Not Sufficient.

An ad for a carry-on bag marks the story’s fold:

Travel without the panic
Keep everything in one handy place, so you are free to focus on what’s beyond the airport.

Travel Panic

on a scale of

Sufficiency

focus on what’s beyond

Three Mexican countries that are not Mexico – quick, name them.

            free to focus on

torture – persecution - fear

            everything in one handy place

Not.  Sufficient.

WALKING TO THE PANAMA

WALKING TO THE PANAMA
Seattle – 03.28.2019

1.

Cut through Judkins Park
on my way to the I.D.

African-American man
of indeterminate age
could be thirty could be fifty
sitting on the steps
in the sun
with two tall boys fresh
and two young boys
ten or twelve years old

I greet them
walk past
one boy says

Hey, mister
can you give me
five dollars?

Sorry, kid
says I
I’m running on empty.

Which I am
except for American Capitalist
credit card good for all emergencies
in my privilege pocket.

I walk away
thinking about what
one time I might have done

judgments/anger

On this Seattle sunshine day
I walk away

saddened

thinking about my future
not much left not worried

thinking about their future
blank screen
fade-to-black

Thinking:

This is the world we’ve made
This is the world we’re making
This is the world we’re passing on

This is the world.

2.

What looks like
a rumpled & crumpled
pile of carpet felt
is some somebody’s shelter

A sneakered foot kicks out

In a second
the top flops
a hand reaches
fingers grab a bottle
bottle disappears.

This is the world.

3.

Down the street
a giant bodhisattva
blesses fresh fruit juice bubble tea

MEMO TO THE REPUBLICAN POLITICAL CLASS

MEMO TO THE REPUBLICAN POLITICAL CLASS

Wait.

More fires are coming.  Drought followed by heavy rain.  Floods.  More coming.  Infrastructure collapse.  Coming.

Catastrophe creeping up on your living room.

Wait.

Oh, and while you’re waiting, more children are going to get killed in their classrooms.

Wait.

I Love the Greeks

I love the Greeks
they worked so hard
at figuring things out

even if sometimes
they got it wrong

like:

some Greek thought
the reason we see
is because our eyes
are actually spotlights
illuminating the scene

years went by

then

some other Greek
might have been Plato
asked –

how come they don’t work at night?

Duh.

They also never
came up with “blue”
hence the wine dark sea.

With Oedipus
they were
right on the money.

Do Not
(no matter what the reason)

Grow up to be a

Mother-Fucker.

THE DAYS OF TRUMP (15)

                                                  jared & ivanka

float across
the tarmac
take the salutes

you were born for this

there’s no ground
beneath your feet.

Smooth skinned animals
they approach in absolute silence
they have no odor.

faces
parked in neutral

brains working hard
at making sense
of all the whatevers
in their rarified world.

jared & ivanka

perfectly adept
at entrances
and exits
otherwise skittish.

Every room
a showroom
and they know
they are the show

they provide a current
that registers as white noise

their every thought
half-formed
and perfectly
enunciated.

When they leave

all rise

later

no one remembers
they were there
nor what they might have said.

jared & ivanka

husband & wife
each the other’s fantasy

when they fuck

they hover

and never touch.
